Impact

As I grow older, I need to know what is the impact of my life.

In history's time line, my years are but a microdot.

I am powerless against the crashing surf.

I cannot cure all the sickness in the world,

Nor vanish the apathy and hopelessness.

I cannot make peace among angry enemies,

Nor channel violence into forgiving.

But I can move pebbles one at a time.

I can show my children how to laugh.

I can reach out my hand to lift another,

Make a place at my Passover table,

Build knowledge upon knowledge.

And beyond these external acts,

I can open myself to others,

Offering love and friendship to those

Whose lives I touch in the few years I have.

I do have an impact.
